We survived the flood – my kids are still scared

a child is crying“We experienced a flood this summer, although it did not affect us as much as others, to this day I wake up sweaty with fear of remembering the sound of falling water. The worst thing is with children. During the day it seems, that they do not remember those moments, at night my daughter runs to the window in her sleep, climbs onto the windowsill. In the morning she remembers nothing. The son, on the other hand, has nightmarish dreams, he often screams, wakes up sweaty and scared. What to do?”

I advise you to wait it out. Children are extremely sensitive beings, but they can forget unpleasant experiences. Many effects of traumatic situations disappear on their own. To be honest, it would be hard to come up with a quick-aid strategy. If someone got very scared and lived for some time in fear and uncertainty, it must have time for that, for the wound to heal, and memories faded. That's why I think, that you should wait quietly. Indulgence, patience and a double dose of heat should do the job.
